The LGBT people in India

How wonderful a society can be when its absolutely normal to express ourselves publicly, when we wake up.  Openness may not be easy and may not disarm prejudice but to give it a start is itself, a great way to speak for yourself and raise your voice against the odds.

In a world full of people supporting equality on the outside, why never speak for the LGBTQ community? Why is LGBTQ community still struggling to prove them to be treated equally?

LGBT individuals are merely individuals who have sexual preferences that differ from what would appear to be the ‘norm’, due to differing learned behaviours and, you know, having a personal perspective and mindset that differs from everyone else’s. The misconceptions about their identity and the disgust associated with the community are not being changed in the mainstream media. They are still being mocked upon and the media continues to profit from their sufferings. Transphobic movies like Lakshmi make huge profits at the box office, an upcoming show called ‘pati Patni Aur panga’ reinforces the idea that transgender people need gender reaffirming surgery to transition to the gender they identify as.

Skip the Social media and understand their history first

In ancient times, India was known for its pluralism and diversity. This included accepting individuals who are not just male or female but other genders and sexual orientations too. Throughout historical events and changes, Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code got introduced. It is a section of the Indian Penal Code introduced in 1861 during the British rule of India. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender. Over the past decade, LGBT people have gained more and more tolerance and acceptance in India, especially in large cities. Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, etc. are some words that are even today spoken with a little hesitation in our society. It is not long ago that people of the LGBTQI community were considered felons under section 377. The overturning of this law on September 6 2018 was a great achievement for India, especially for the community. They felt heard, seen, and accepted. People can open a little more about it than they did in the past but, it’s still been looked down upon. The society we live in is still playing it hard to open up their mind a little bit. In a society like India discrimination is seen everywhere and especially if you come from a community they think as impure. But are their opinions worth your energy?
